MANILA, Philippines - A Filipino PhD student won back-to-back awards from two international health conferences for his research work on the health and welfare of seafarers.
Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno III was judged to have the best studies at the 11th Conference of International Society of Travel Medicine in Budapest, Hungary on May 24 to 28.
"Both studies came out receiving the top scores out of the many studies submitted. ISTM President Frank von Sonnenburg extended his congratulations to the Lucero-Prisno," the Department of Foreign Affairs said in an article on its website (www.dfa.gov.ph).
Citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in London, the DFA said Prisno is a medical doctor and Nippon Foundation Fellow at the Seafarers International Research Center.
He is taking his doctorate degree at Cardiff University in Wales, the DFA added.
Prisno submitted two studies entitled, "International Seafarers as Patients: Towards a Model of an Effective Global Health System" and "Global Seafarers: Why Risky to STIs and HIV When They Work and Travel."
After receiving his award in Hungary, Prisno received medals for the studies he presented at the First International Congress of Maritime, Tropical and Hyperbaric Medicine at Gdynia, Poland held on June 4-6.
His paper presentations were "An Analysis of the AIDS Epidemic in the Maritime Industry" and "The Anatomy of Stress: the Filipino Seafarer and His Work."
The second study was conducted together with Nerissa Espiritu and Eva Lopez of the National Maritime Polytechnic of the Philippines.
"The government-funded study was based on a survey of 3,000 Filipino seafarers. Dr. Bogdan Jaremin, director of the Institute, handed the medals," the DFA said.
Lucero-Prisno has been a long-time advocate of Filipino seafarers, with his calls for reforms in the maritime industry and social corporate responsibility from ship owners.
His work on AIDS in the maritime industry has yielded several substantive programs, and he continues to champion health and welfare protection for the global seafarer.
He recently co-authored the book, International Medical Guide for Ships, published by the World Health Organization, which is carried by all ships and used as a guide for health problems onboard.
In 2005, he won the World Science Forum research competition in Budapest, Hungary and in 2008 received the British Council’s SHINE International Student Award in the UK.
