MIAMI (AP) - Making his first trip to his mother's native Philippines in 35 years, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra heard a familiar question.

What does Dwyane Wade's future hold?

That's what Spoelstra was asked Tuesday after he, Heat assistants David Fizdale and Chad Kammerer, and others held a clinic for about 200 kids from the Filipino city of Zamboanga. The kids quizzed Spoelstra on several topics, including whether Wade would stay with the Heat past next season.

Spoelstra said he thought he was "answering questions at a postgame press conference."

Spoelstra is part of a sports envoy trip to the Philippines organized by the U.S. State Department and the NBA. Spoelstra, the NBA's first Filipino-American coach, hasn't been to the nation since he was 3.

MANILA - "Bayan Ko" singer Freddie Aguilar has clarified his controversial remark that drew flak from fellow singers Arnel Pineda and Gary Valenciano.

"Hindi ako nagsasabi ng monkey. Ang sabi ko kaya tayo binabansagan, [tayong] mga Filipino, [na] unggoy dahil manggagaya tayo," Aguilar said in a taped interview aired on "The Buzz" Sunday.

In one of his interviews, Aguilar reportedly slammed Pineda, the Filipino vocalist of American rock band "Journey," and international singing sensation Charice for proving what international singer Mariah Carey had reportedly said about Filipinos.

Carey had allegedly likened Filipinos to monkeys because they would only mimic the styles and songs of other international artists.

Aguilar maintained that he never mentioned Pineda in that interview.

"Si Arnel (Pineda) hindi ko siya isinama doon. Binanggit lang iyong pangalan ni Gary (Valenciano), tapos si Regine (Velasquez) din. Sabi nila tinawag ni Mariah Carey na ganoon (monkey) tapos dinugtong ko na lang iyon. Pero actually isa lang ang tinanong, si Charice lang," he said.

The Filipino folk music icon, however, stressed that he has nothing against Charice and Valenciano. He said he was merely voicing out his opinion.

"Tinanong ako sa opinion ko. Alangan naman ang ibigay kong opinyon hindi iyong nararamdaman ko," he stressed.

He acknowledged though that Charice is a good singer. He added that he would be impressed more if she sings original Filipino music in her gigs abroad.

Aguilar, who is behind the worldwide hit "Anak," also made this challenge to all Filipino singers: "Ako magtatanong sa lahat ng mga singer na Filipino. Bakit puro banyaga ang kinakanta ninyo? Iyan ang tanong ko. Hindi iyong tinatanong niyo sa akin kung bakit ko kayo tinatawag na unggoy."

"Kayo ang nagpatawag na unggoy dahil gaya-gaya kayo," he added.

MANILA, Philippines - A Filipino PhD student won back-to-back awards from two international health conferences for his research work on the health and welfare of seafarers.

Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno III was judged to have the best studies at the 11th Conference of International Society of Travel Medicine in Budapest, Hungary on May 24 to 28.

"Both studies came out receiving the top scores out of the many studies submitted. ISTM President Frank von Sonnenburg extended his congratulations to the Lucero-Prisno," the Department of Foreign Affairs said in an article on its website (www.dfa.gov.ph).

Citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in London, the DFA said Prisno is a medical doctor and Nippon Foundation Fellow at the Seafarers International Research Center.

He is taking his doctorate degree at Cardiff University in Wales, the DFA added.

Prisno submitted two studies entitled, "International Seafarers as Patients: Towards a Model of an Effective Global Health System" and "Global Seafarers: Why Risky to STIs and HIV When They Work and Travel."

After receiving his award in Hungary, Prisno received medals for the studies he presented at the First International Congress of Maritime, Tropical and Hyperbaric Medicine at Gdynia, Poland held on June 4-6.

His paper presentations were "An Analysis of the AIDS Epidemic in the Maritime Industry" and "The Anatomy of Stress: the Filipino Seafarer and His Work."

The second study was conducted together with Nerissa Espiritu and Eva Lopez of the National Maritime Polytechnic of the Philippines.

"The government-funded study was based on a survey of 3,000 Filipino seafarers. Dr. Bogdan Jaremin, director of the Institute, handed the medals," the DFA said.

Lucero-Prisno has been a long-time advocate of Filipino seafarers, with his calls for reforms in the maritime industry and social corporate responsibility from ship owners.

His work on AIDS in the maritime industry has yielded several substantive programs, and he continues to champion health and welfare protection for the global seafarer.

He recently co-authored the book, International Medical Guide for Ships, published by the World Health Organization, which is carried by all ships and used as a guide for health problems onboard.

In 2005, he won the World Science Forum research competition in Budapest, Hungary and in 2008 received the British Council’s SHINE International Student Award in the UK.
